Toddlers and Technology
In class on Tuesday we talked about
how kids in this generation are growing with technology. I mean, I did grow up
with a Playstation 1 and things like that, but now kids are learning to play
games and use technology before they can even read and write. Apart of me wants
to be like ‘that’s horrible for the child. How is a 4 year old going to learn
how to play on the iPad or play the Wii before the child is even able to learn
to write his/her own name”, but at the same time I’m like ‘well, this could be
a good thing since kids are learning to think and use a different side of their
brain which could possibly help them in the long run.’ Also, there are a lot of
educational games that can be played on the Wii and iPad to help children learn
and think through things that they may not get in class otherwise. So in the
future if they do end up making a Primer that tailors specifically to my child,
I think that I may end up getting one for him/her (depending on the price). I feel like it can help with my child
educationally, developmentally, and mentally, and what mother doesn’t want that
for their child?

Bekah, I definitely agree with you! It is hard being from a different generation and looking upon the current generation and its advances. I am constantly shocked at how advanced children are with the current technology and while reading The Diamond Age, it makes me really think about what it would be like if today's society was like that. Would I be as judgmental? I'm not sure. The primer seems like something good and bad. It all depends on who's hands it ends up in. Just like you, I believe some programs/technology can help a child advance. Also, just like Professor Hager said in class, there are some problem solving video games and in all actuality that is helping a child to learn/problem solve. All in all, I believe I will still be shocked at kids almost constant use of technology today but who knows how that'll change when I have kids of my own.
ReplyDeleteIt’s pretty funny to see how technology has made our world easier yet more complex at the same time. Before, lives were measured in years, days and hours. Now, they are measured in minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. Texting, Facebook, Twitter and all other social media outlets have everyone mesmerized! (Including myself ☺)
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard for me to imagine life without computers, the Internet, cell phones, microwaves, video games and the other electronic devices we routinely use nowadays! And I don’t think any of us can imagine doing a research paper without the Internet! It makes me sound spoiled to others who had no other choice but to only use books.
It's true that there are some drawbacks to children being so acclimated to technology; innovation links to progress and I agree with you that this progress has had many positive effects on children! Either way, society has to adapt to the fact technology is a staple in life and this is not likely to change any time soon. If anything, technology will continue to progress and become even more immersed in daily living.
I think that a lot of interactive games encourage strategic and critical thinking, which helps kids grow. This kind of thinking can lead to innovative ideas and stretch their minds. Of course some games are mindless, but many games are designed to encourage thinking! Especially many games for kids on the iPad! They even have a category in the app store for education, which is filled with thousands of different apps.
If and when they do come out with a primer for children, I am totally going to buy it too! I think it is an awesome idea ☺
I agree with you! Kid's now a days seem to learn a lot more on the wii or ipads than what we used too! There are a lot of education games on the ipad that people are seeing. My boss has his kid learn the alphabet and shapes and numbers on the ipad and it seems to be working well for him.
ReplyDeleteI agree that technology like the Primer and educational ractives, as well as current technology like the availability of educational programs on the iPad. However, when technology becomes a barrier to education, like it did for many of the thetes in Diamond Age, that's something to be afraid of. It sounded like it could be really difficult for children without somewhat influential parents to even learn to read. It's cool to look at Nell and how she's benefited form the Primer, but you also have to remember Harv, who never even learned to read or write, lying on his deathbed and all he can think of are his trashy murder ractives. Paranoid or no, it's sometimes hard not to think of that kind of thing when you see an 8 year old playing a game on his or her iPhone and getting in fights over FaceTime.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you as well! I was actually just with my little cousin and he was teaching me how to use the new ipad three! I couldn’t even comprehend how educated he was with it. When he was sitting and teaching me how to use it I was thinking to myself- I can’t believe I’m seriously getting lessons from a nine year old right now!!! It is crazy how much generations change as the years pass by. I do not feel that it is a bad thing at all that children are so advanced with technology. I fell that it will really help to benefit them when they start their career, which will most likely be based around a wide variety of technology. They will have the upper hand compared to someone that did not have the ability to use all these different types of technology when they were young. If there was such thing as a primer I would do the same thing as you and defiantly purchase it for my child. People say that technology will be the end of our children but I believe that it will only help them to grow and learn to adapt to our fast passed growing technology.
